Poseidon Lures
Poseidon Lures rigging for models.
Boutique Hook Sets ~ Poseidon Lures prefers for slower speeds with slant heads and bullets to run a swinging hook set on a single. We find with slower troll speeds from 6.5 - 8.5 knots the lure stays vibrant and tracks in a straight line with a good cycle time. Running this rig at this speed will increase hook ups and strike rates for Marlin species and Southern Blue Fin Tuna. The preferred hooks we use for this type of rig are FUDU, Pa'a and high end stainless.
Blue Marlin is the target species for this hook set mainly.

Twin hook 60-deg Shackle rig. Free swinging hook sets
The twin hook 60° shackle rig has a great range of motion and does not impede the lure as we do not use hook locks with this rig.
It keeps the head mobile and the lure can work aggressively without slowing the action. Poundages of leaders permitted. Like all fish trickery and all manner of fishing, the lighter the better when it comes to leaders with a supple leader preferred.
Originally the shackle rig was invented by Peter Pakula, a man that needs no introduction in the game fishing world.
The rig itself is powerful and when placed in the lure correctly it is effective.
The easiest way to get this correct is place the V from the 60° rig through the darkest part of the skirt being the top. Hook points up
When placed in the water like this it will run true. The hooks self-align when placed in the lure but take a moment to line them up nicely prior to free spooling back under light tension setting the spread.
The three sizes we have in the twin hooks 60° shackle rig are as follows 7/0 8/0 9/0
All with strong shackles. This covers the range all the way up to from Poseidon Medusa 9.5 to Poseidon Kraken Snub 14.5.
We use 7691s hooks and as such we keep our shackle rigs on the slightly smaller side as we feel larger hooks would be adding too much hardware into the mix. The hooks that we use are different to what is conventionally used and what historically comes with a shackle rig but super strong and with 7x7 wire to combat fish with side cutters as mouths. There is still enough of a mm gape between hook shank and hook point for effective running’s on models and good hook up ratios. The lures and rigs balance when run like this for a host of species.
Note: Please take Extreme care when handling these very sharp and dangerous hooks, especially if they are in fish.

Poseidon Medusa 9.5-inch 7/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig 7691s or 8/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Medusa Wobble 12.5-inch 8/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig 7691s or 9/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Kraken Snub 14.5-inch 9/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig 7691s or 10/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Cyclops 12.5-inch 9/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig or 10/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig

We recommend if trolling slower speeds for Blue or Black marlin a single swinging hook set
Poseidon Medusa 9.5-inch 7/0 Twin hook
60 deg shackle rig 7691s or 8/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Kraken Snub 14.5-inch 9/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig 7691s or 10/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Medusa Wobble 12.5-inch
8/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig 7691s
or 9/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Cyclops 12.5-inch 9/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig or 10/0 single 7691s Semi stiff rig
Poseidon Hydra 11-inch - 7/0 Twin hook 60 deg shackle rig 7691s or 8/0 single semi stiff 7691s. The skirt saddles behind the head are quiet long extending the head under the skirt and as a result 7/0 is a good fit in sizing
Poseidon Hydra 9.5-inch - 9/0 or 8/0 chemically sharpened twin hook sets or single 7691s 8/0 semi stiff rig. A stainless 7691s twin shackle rig will kill this lures action, but twin hook chemically sharpened or single hook keeps it swimming well. As a result, an excellent light tackle option for sailfish and small Black Marlin and Mahi Mahi. This is a finesse model.
Rigging hook size step up in single hooks
Poseidon Lures has a step-up system when it comes to the rigging. For instance, the Poseidon Medusa 9.5 inch, we run 7/0 twin 60° shackle rig or 8/0 single semi stiff rig. Even when we use semi stiff single hook with the up sizing, we do not use hook locks for these models. The Borra Borra Slant head and the Barrel Bullet, we would use hook locks on, but the rest of the range we will not. We use a bead, and the rig itself is supple and not super rigid. This enables great range of motion and gives you the best of both worlds. Some people prefer a single hook set and some people prefer twin hooks.
In saying that, a super rigid stiff rig, even with a bead or rubber stopper and without a hook lock, will and does impede some lures. We have found a happy medium for this with our models in the construction of single hook rigs, after extensive testing and using the lures ourselves.
Whether using a swinging single hook or a semi stiff single hook rig the action of the lure for these models is the same at 8.5 to 9 knots or faster.
